John W. Schroeder Scholarship

John Schroeder was the quintessential Boys & Girls Club professional. Through a long and storied career, he did it all, with professionalism, compassion, intelligence, humor and class.

He served in many key roles, at the local, regional and national levels. His versatility was astounding. He served in a wide variety of leadership capacities throughout his career, and in several instances where he was asked to tackle a tough assignment, he never wavered in responding enthusiastically, even when the circumstances were not personally convenient. Moreover, he always succeeded in improving whatever situation he encountered. The bigger the challenges, the more John relished the assignment. Whether running Government Relations, overseeing BGCA's administrative operations, or serving as the senior leader of the Midwest Region, and later the Pacific Region, John exhibited skilled leadership, people skills and a mission-driven mindset that never failed to inspire and impress.

He was also the life of the party, whether on the golf course with friends and colleagues, or singing bass as a founding member of BGCA's long time house band, the Parallel Fifths. Despite health concerns, he traveled from Florida to Atlanta to sing with the Fifths at Ed Mishrell's retirement party last year - in what turned out to be his final performance with the group.

John was more than a Boys & Girls Clubs Master & Mentor, recipient of the Thomas G. Garth Character and Courage Award, and professional's professional - though he was all of those things. John was a legend in our field - a special person who impacted countless lives over decades of dedicated service. His legacy will forever be remembered.

Friends and colleagues have established a scholarship fund in his memory. The fund will be used to support a club director (not a CEO) to attend the BGCA Club Directors Academy during regional leadership conferences. Recipients will be selected through an application process that will be reviewed by a committee of his colleagues.
