Southern Missouri Chapter of The Professional Association

November 4, 2016

The Boys & Girls Clubs of the Ozarks and Springfield leadership met to discuss the possibility of creating a local chapter of The Professional Association (TPA).  Pat Gartland and Stoney Hays agreed that this could be a great opportunity to influence our staff through leadership development, recognition, training, and networking events that would support both organizational needs.  In November 2015, BGC Springfield hosted a full staff meeting that included all staff from both organizations.  We utilized the TPA power point presentation which included TPA’s mission, vision, and five pillars of support.  We also shared the reason “why” professional staff should join and the benefits they would receive.  The presentation’s message was well received and opened the eyes of many professionals who were considering if The Boys & Girls Club would or could be their life long career. The following month, we reconvened and asked the group if they would support having a chapter that would be managed and ran by staff rather than the CEO or Senior Leadership……and they said “Yes!”  That day we selected, as a group, to create a Chapter and call it Southern Missouri (SOMO) Chapter of Working Committees: Social, Recognition, Finance, Professional Development, and Executive.  During that same meeting we nominated and selected our President (Brandy Harris), Vice President (Tony Ary), and Secretary (Patrick Stewart).  Oddly enough, we had representation from both organizations on the leadership team and they went to work right away.  The Recognition Committee began collecting years of service dates for both Clubs and recognizes staff during our quarterly meetings.  The Social Committee planned and implemented a social event for the end of summer program and has plans for a Holiday Social event in December as well.  The Professional Development Committee worked closely with the BGCA Training and Professional Development Committee (TAPDC) and planned the first ever BGCA All Staff Training in May.  The committee worked hard to identify local trainers and guest speakers for a two day training schedule that included activities and fun.  They also worked closely with BGCA to promote the training opportunity and had over 120 staff from 6 different BGC organizations attend.  BGCA provides three national trainers that cover Programing for Teens, Passport to Manhood, and Triple Play.  Local training's include Love & Logic, On the Spot Fun, Classroom Management, and many more.  The committee also developed a website that promotes staff conversations, highlighting programs and events and program sharing for the Clubs.   All of these activities and networking opportunities have created a better understanding of youth development and how others are challenged and struggle in a similar way.  By working together, we now have more program sharing, more job opportunities that are shared across organizations, and have made friends with fellow professionals.  It has been amazing to see our young professionals taking leadership of the Southern Missouri Chapter of the TPA to the highest level of professionalism. Our next step is to reach out to other Clubs in Southwest Missouri to encourage others to get involved.  We still have work to do, and sometimes we don’t always agree, but by staying focused on our mission and allowing staff input, I know we will continue to grow, train, and develop youth development professionals for Boys & Girls Clubs for years to come.
