A message from Jim Clark, President and CEO, Boys & Girls Clubs of America

Wednesday, April 3, 2019

Early this morning, I learned John Schroeder passed away last night in Orlando, Florida. I was fortunate to get to know John over the past several years but certainly not as well as many did. He was revered throughout our Movement for the enormous impact he had on Boys & Girls Club members, staff and colleagues.

John wore many hats over his 35-year career, and wore them all well. Working for and with Clubs at the local, regional and national levels, his remarkable versatility helped countless organizations to not only succeed but thrive. Whether running Government Relations, managing BGCA operations, or leading our Midwest and Pacific Regions, John’s leadership, people skills and mission-driven mindset always shined through.

When asked to tackle a tough assignment, he invariably took it on with enthusiasm. The bigger the challenge, the more he relished the assignment. Like in 1993, when he oversaw the herculean task of relocating our national office from New York City to Atlanta.

John earned numerous professional honors, including recognition as a Master & Mentor and receiving BGCA’s highest honor, the Thomas G. Garth Award. Top to bottom, he was the quintessential Boys & Girls Club professional. Across his long and storied career, John did it all with professionalism, compassion, intelligence, humor and class.

On behalf of the Boys & Girls Club Movement, our deepest condolences to John’s family.

SO many memories of John, but one of my favorites was siting in a hospitality room signing (Rob Damrick was leading songs) and John would yell out how do you spell Boys & Girls Club and everyone would yell back F.U.N. He was truly one of our legends, and never lost site of why we do what we do. I was blessed to know him. Tish Murry Boys & Girls Club of San Marcos
