Errol Sewell Mourned

It is with tremendous sadness that Boys & Girls Clubs of America announces the passing of longtime friend and colleague, Errol Sewell. A man of great vision, Errol’s integrity and drive were an inspiration to all who had the good fortune to work with him. Growing up as a Club kid in Valdosta, Georgia, he understood the incredible impact that Clubs can make on young people. He carried that understanding forward to touch the lives of many as a friend and mentor.

His 42-year career began in 1969 with BGCA as a Regional Service Director, and included posts with Boys & Girls Club organizations in Milwaukee, Chicago and Panama City, Florida, as its first CEO.

With his 1998 retirement as Senior Vice President of Field Operations, BGCA established the W. Errol Sewell Leadership Award to recognize outstanding achievements of professionals in the area of field services. His numerous honors included being named a BGCA Master & Mentor, and induction to the BGCA Alumni Hall of Fame in 2001.

Under Errol’s leadership, more than 1,200 Clubs were established, including

expansion into public housing communities, public schools, Native lands and

U.S. military installations worldwide. William Errol Sewell, 1931-2018

Errol would often credit the Club for saving his life and ultimately lifting his family to a place of fulfilled potential and generational success. Numerous Club professionals, past and present, owe their success to the foundation Errol put in place. He and his passion will be missed.
